Ranger Longhorn Superior N6 10 meter radio

Ranger Longhorn Superior N6 High-Power 10 Meter AM/FM/SSB Radio

The Ranger Longhorn Superior N6 is built for the operator who wants traditional Ranger controls, all-mode capability and substantially more RF output than a conventional mobile radio.

This is not a small radio with a large number printed on the box. One look underneath tells the story.

A massive aluminum heatsink and large cooling fan form the foundation of the Longhorn’s high-output RF section, giving the radio the thermal capacity required for sustained high-power operation.

Current manufacturer/dealer specifications place the Longhorn in the 400+ watt output class, with independent testing of properly tuned units demonstrating output into the 500-watt range under some operating conditions. Actual output depends on mode, alignment, supply voltage and individual radio setup.

All-Mode Operation

The Longhorn gives the operator:

AM • FM • USB • LSB • CW • PA

That makes it equally at home with traditional AM operation, FM or long-distance SSB work.

Power When You Want It — Control When You Need It

Raw output isn’t much use if you can’t control it.

The Longhorn provides both a front-panel HIGH/LOW power selector and variable RF power control, allowing the operator to tailor transmitter output to the application. Dealer specifications describe approximately 400+ watts in the high-power configuration, with lower-power operation available from the front panel.

Traditional Controls — Right on the Front Panel

One of the Longhorn’s greatest strengths is its straightforward operating layout.

The front panel provides direct control of:

Volume and Squelch
Mic Gain and RF Gain
Echo and Echo Delay
Talkback
RF Power
Operating Mode
Band Selection
Noise Blanker / ANL
Roger Beep
SWR Functions
Display Dimmer

For operators who prefer a real knob over another menu screen, this is the kind of radio Ranger has built its reputation around.

Built-In SWR Monitoring and Protection

The Longhorn includes a built-in SWR meter and automatic high-SWR protection circuit, giving the operator another layer of protection for the high-power RF section.

Full Frequency and Channel Displays

A bright white LED frequency display keeps operating frequency clearly visible while the separate channel display makes it easy to see your selected position at a glance.

The illuminated analog meter retains the classic Ranger appearance while providing signal and RF information.

Echo and Talkback Built In

Variable echo, adjustable delay and variable talkback are already incorporated into the radio, eliminating the need for external accessories when those features are desired.

Ranger Noise-Canceling Microphone Included

The Longhorn is supplied with Ranger’s SRA-198NC noise-canceling microphone, a particularly useful feature in trucks, mobile installations and other noisy operating environments.

Serious Cooling for Serious Output

High-output radios generate heat.

Ranger addressed that directly with an extra-large heatsink and forced-air cooling fan rather than trying to package the amplifier section into a conventional mobile-radio chassis.

The result is a radio that looks every bit as substantial as its specifications suggest.

The Bottom Line

The Ranger Longhorn Superior N6 is aimed at the operator who wants:

High RF output
AM, FM and SSB capability
Traditional front-panel controls
Variable power
Built-in SWR monitoring
Echo and talkback
Heavy-duty cooling
Classic Ranger styling

There are smaller radios.

There are cheaper radios.

But if what you’re looking for is a full-size, high-output Ranger that doesn’t apologize for being big, the Longhorn Superior N6 deserves your attention.

The Ranger Longhorn Superior N6 is marketed as a 10-meter amateur radio. Amateur-band transmission requires appropriate licensing and lawful operation.
